The name alone makes you want to cover your nether regions. But at Jack the Snipper barbershop in Byron Bay, they’re focused more on the top of your head. And after successfully taming the hair of Byron’s men for a year now (no easy feat in that town), they’ve branched out, creating their own range of men’s grooming products. First up is the Jack the Snipper Original Styling Crème, a contemporary take on Brylcreem that is 100 per cent Australian-made, right down to the product’s container.
Paul Macnamara is the brains behind Jack the Snipper. He’s a second-generation barber who’s been in the game for 25 years. Originally from the UK, Macnamara set up shop in Byron Bay after moving to Australia and operating several successful barbershops in Melbourne.
So what is the Styling Creme and what does it do? Macnamara explains: “Anyone can get dressed. But we want you to feel dressed. The creme has been designed for just about any man, whether you are a corporate needing something sleek, a guy who likes his quiff or you’re just a casual guy who likes it messy and textured. It’s been designed to be soft and easy to apply into wet or dry hair and it’s super easy to rinse out.”
And the thoughtfulness of the product extends even to how it smells. “The scent is very important. It’s what helps conjure memories, like in the barbershops of old. The scent is distinctive and masculine; it’s woody, sweet, spicy and original,” Macnamara explains.
